Wood'S
World
HI, my name is Amy Wood. I have had the pleasure of teaching kindergarten for the last 20 years. I'm always so impressed at the development of skills and learning that kindergarten students achieve. Kindergarten should be a year of fun, learning, discovery, and individual growth. My goal for your child is to have a happy, productive, and transforming year. Working together, we can create a good educational foundation for your child's future school success!

Support you child by insuring his/her good nutrition, rest, promptness, and good attendance.
Check your child's backpack daily. You never know what you may find.
homework, sight words, reading folder, graded papers, crafts, important papers from the office, annoucements, etc.
Check over your child's homework, but don't do the thinking for them. Give them the answer only if they can not be guided into coming up with the answer on their own.
If he/she is trying to think of a letter, for example, have them say and point to the ABC's until the find it, cue them with the name of someone they know, or give them a word that rhymes.

Library books, reading folders and reading folder books, graded papers, office and homework folders, etc.
iStudent behavior notes and failed sight word test notes must be signed and returned the next day.
Students can only be successful at school if they are present and ready to learn physically, mentally, and emotionally. If your child must be absent, please call the school to let us know.
You are your child's primary teacher. What you do and say will demonstrate your value of education.
Help you child by creating a routine
for homework, and modeling a positive attitude about school.
Learning the sight words is an important step to insure reading fluency and comprehension. Students are asked to learn 3 new sight words each week. They will be tested on the 3 words each Thursday. Students who can read all 3 words randomly will pick a treat. Kindergarten students should learn a minimum of 50 words by the end of the year, but I think you will find with your help and encouragement they many can master the entire list.
There are many ways to study the sight words with fun activites. There are many free online sites with sight word games. Students benefit from creating flash cards for weekly words, playing sight word Bingo, sight word fishing, writing them in shaving cream, picking them out their environment (road signs, magazines, new papers, story time books, etc.). Two good free online sites are starfall.com and abcya.com. Look for the heading sight words. You will find many other important skills taught on these sites like letter sounds, reading, number recogintion and counting skills.

Kindergarten Curriculum
Students will work on mastery of the letters and their sounds, identifying, counting, and writing numbers to 20, and 50 sight words by Christmas. Some students will exceed these expectations.
Students will work on mastering additional phonetic sounds like blends, long and short vowels, r-controlled vowels, diagraphs, diphthongs, and sight words. We will learn rhyming words, mulit-meaning words, opposites, and many vocabulary words. In math, we will learn to count, write, and identify numbers to 100. We will study addition and subtraction facts for the sum of 10.
Some other math concepts are 2D and 3D shapes and their properties, directional words, measurement of length, time, volume, weight, patterns, and sequencing. After Christmas, our focus will be blending sounds and using sight words to read and comprehend, writing simple sentences independently with beginning captial letter, ending puncuation, phonetic spelling, and correctly spelled simple sight words.
Throughout the year students will learn many ideas and concepts in science, social studies, art, music, and practical living. Some of these concepts are plants, animals, scientific discovery, holidays, community, historical figures, the elements of art and music, and healthy life choices.
To build character, students are guided with the "Leader in Me" program to instill the seven productive habits of: 1. Be proactive. 2. Begin with the end in mind. 3. Put first things first. 4. Think win-win. 5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. 6. Synergize 7. Sharpen the Saw.
These skills are instilled with stories, discussions, videos, modeling, role playing, skits, and encouragement. Our goal at WPS is to help your child develop in all areas to give them the skills to be all that he/she can be. Our goal is happy, healthy, informed, productive and educated citizens.
